Reducing Carbon Emissions from the Transport Sector: Still a Forgotten Issue in Global Negotiations?
Transport represents 26 percent of global CO2 emissions, and this sector is one of the few where emissions are still growing. Last May, at the International Transport Forum in Leipzig, the United Nations Secretary Ban Ki-moon asked transport ministers from around the globe to intensify their efforts in the fight against climate change and to find greener solutions to prevent climate change. Despite its importance, transport has been marginalized in every climate agreement, with no objective measurement of its global environmental footprint. An adequate carbon policy is required to drive energy efficiency and a shift to lower carbon fuels is required to deliver an ambitious EU 2030 climate strategy. However, it is not only about CO2: transport also generates a lot of negative externalities, such as noise, congestion, and pollution. Bearing this in mind, a coherent and deep discussion on sustainable transport is essential. Understanding this issue from the perspective of the … [Read more...]

UK: 90% of ultra low emission vehicle owners positive about buying another
A new government report has realigned long-held beliefs about electric car ownership and usage patterns. Echoing points made by government and industry electric vehicle body Go Ultra Low, the Department for Transport (DfT) report, entitled ‘Uptake of Ultra Low Emission Vehicles in the UK’, draws on the research from almost 50 UK and international sources, and points to a significant change in the way motorists use and own plug-in vehicles. Contrary to popular perceptions, evidence from the report shows that 82% of Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV)-owning households in the UK use their electric car as their main vehicle, while for 20% of owners an electric vehicle is the only car. The report also found that ULEV usage is not restricted to short-distance journeys, as per previous predictions. In fact, plug-ins are being driven for comparable mileages to petrol and diesel cars. Where an ULEV is used as the main car in the household, the average annual mileage is approximately 8,850 … [Read more...]
UK: 67% of drivers would consider a plug-in vehicle as their next car
New research released today by joint industry/government fundedGo Ultra Low has found that the majority of car buyers aspire to own high-tech, low-emission electric vehicles to score social points over their neighbours and peers. For 100 years1, the phrase ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ has referenced the kind of lifestyle that the middle classes aspire to. Now, with new car registrations hitting a 10-year high, it is clear that many UK drivers aspire to the cost benefits, style and convenience of electric motoring. The study2 by Go Ultra Low shows that the concept of ’keeping up with the Joneses’ is alive and well across the UK, with middle-class people named Jones leading the way for the nation’s car buying preferences. When questioned, respondents with the surname Jones proved to be at the forefront of ‘green’ motoring, with 77% of the group identifying alternatively-fuelled vehicles as a purchase consideration versus 67% of the wider population. The fact that ultra low emission … [Read more...]

From January to June, 14,586 new registrations of ultra low emission vehicles (ULEV) were made, a significant year-to-date increase on the 4,096 of the same timeframe in 2014. The record volumes exceed last year’s 14,498 annual total registrations of vehicles eligible for Government’s Plug-in Car Grant, the highest volume ever at the year’s halfway point. The same comparison of January-June registrations for 2014 against 2013 saw an increase of 163%*, the robust rises emphasising the sustained and increasing scale of the UK electrically-powered vehicle market.
